Dare to Dresden

Today is my day on the Dare to Dresden Blog Hop. I love Dresden Plate blocks, so I was excited when I read about this hop. Many thanks to Christine from Quilt Monster in My Closet and Madame Samm from Sew We Quilt for all their hard work putting this blog hop together. It has been a cold, dreary month and so I wanted something that felt like spring. I used fabrics from "Nature's Notebook" by April Cornell, "Summer Breeze II" by Sentimental Studios, and some fabrics from my stash. The design is mine. The quilt is 34 inches square.
Here's a close up of the central block. It is 12 inches square.
I used a ruler called the "Fat Cat's" Ruler by Darlene Zimmerman for E Z Quilting. It makes a circle that is made from twelve wedges and is fun and easy to use. I used blue painter's tape to mark where the ruler runs along the top of the fabric strip.
OK now is confession time. I had planned to make a four block quilt, but I quickly realized I didn't have the time or desire to make four blocks, so I had some leftover wedges. I used some of the extras in the inner border, but I see a wedge quilt in my future! I am thrilled with how the quilt turned out and am happy I changed the design.
Now for the giveaway. How about a pattern for a Dresden Plate quilt of your own. This pattern is by Hearthsewn. It contains instructions for two quilts, a Dresden Hearts Quilt(20" x 20") and a Crossroads Quilt(51" x 59"). Leave one comment(please not more than one) on this post. I must have a way to contact you, if I cannot I will choose someone else. I will choose the winner on Feb. 2, 2013.

Thanks so much for stopping by and be sure to see the other Dresden projects today.

2013 Free Block of the Month

Just a quick reminder before we get started on this year's block of the month. I have a traveling stash box that is ready to send on to someone else. If you are interested in it coming to you, go here to see the contents and leave a comment on that post.
Now on the the block of the month. I have decided to do a pieced series of blocks that are either an old favorite or my take on an old favorite. The central block will finish out a eight inches, then will be surrounded by two more borders resulting in a block that will measures fourteen inches finished and fourteen and one half inches unfinished. Here's an illustration of the borders with the central block left blank.
The layout is fairly simple and will result in a nice lap sized quilt. Here's an illustration of the layout including the block borders.
I am going to be make two blocks each month. The first will be made with a planned color palette and purchased fabric.
The second will be a scrappy version or at least as scrappy as I get! I'm pulling all of these fabrics from my scrap bins. You will notice that I have changed the positions of the colored fabric in the outer border in relation to the background. I did this because I think I'm going to be using neutral fabrics for the sashing and I want the corner squares to be a contrast.

I have finally taken pictures so that I can send on this Traveling Stash box. If you are interested in receiving this box. Please leave a comment on this post by Monday, Jan. 21 at 9:00 p.m. mountain standard time. Sorry but this box circulates in the U.S. only due to shipping costs. Just Thought I'd Let You Know...

I'm still here. I've been taking an unplanned blog break. I find after Christmas I need some down time. I've been reading a good book Edward Rutherfurd's "London". It's very involved and long, but good. I'm learning a lot. I'm on page 659 of 1124.
I have also been working on some projects. First I realized that I have not shown you any of my blocks from the block club that I attend on the first Saturday of every month at a local quilt shop. This year the program is called "Dusty Trails" and I must admitt the fabric is not my favorite, but the blocks are fun and interesting to make. This year we had a choice of Southwest fabrics, Cowboy fabric, or Batiks. I choose the batiks hoping to avoid the cowboy theme...didn't work! Here's the first four blocks.
I've also been working on a UFO. I started this quilt about five years ago and then had to set it aside. I had already finished the blocks including the machine applique, so it I just had to put them together and quilt the project. Here's where I am now.
All the quilting to this point has been in the ditch or closely around the appliques, but I think I'll add some fancy stuff soon.
I'm also nearly finished with the planning stage of a Block of the Month series for this blog. I hope to get the blocks up about the twentieth day of each month, so stay tuned.
I won one of the traveling stash boxes that are circulating in blog land and will be adding to that and having a drawing for it in the next couple of days.
